the design studio of jonathan hoomes / what is yellohammer?
The yellowhammer is the State Bird of Alabama, and Alabama has been known as the "Yellowhammer State" since the Civil War. The yellowhammer nickname was applied to the Confederate soldiers from Alabama when a cavalry company from Huntsville arrived in Kentucky wearing their fine, new uniforms with the sleeves, collars and coattails adorned with bits of brilliant yellow cloth. The term "yellowhammer company" quickly spread throughout the Confederate Army. When the Confederate Veterans in Alabama were organized they took pride in being referred to as the "Yellowhammers" and wore a yellowhammer feather in their caps and lapels during reunions.

While this website is certainly not meant to serve as a history lesson, I take pride in my Alabamian heritage and the state I love. Of course, by the time I got around to branding myself and my work, yellowhammer.com had already been taken by a dialup Internet service provider (that's right, I said dialup!), so I did the next best thing - dropped the "w", made it more modern and edgy and still got the point across, right?
